Chadderton Wellbeing Centre
Client: Community 1st Oldham
Location: Oldham
Chadderton Wellbeing Centre is a pioneering community facility in Oldham, bringing together a wide range of public services under one roof to deliver truly integrated local provision. As the first centre of its kind in the borough, it was conceived to enhance wellbeing by combining health, leisure, learning and community support within a single, accessible civic building.
The centre accommodates a 25-metre swimming pool, gym and fitness suite, public library, café, community meeting rooms and a community police support officer base. This carefully curated mix ensures that residents can access high-quality, fit-for-purpose facilities that support physical activity, social engagement, education and neighbourhood safety. The design prioritises clarity, natural light and adaptable spaces, enabling easy navigation and encouraging cross-use of services.
Sustainability was embedded from the outset, with a range of environmental strategies integrated into the architecture and building systems. These measures significantly reduced the building’s operational impact and contributed to the project receiving both the National LIFT Award for Sustainability and the North West RICS Award for Sustainability, recognising its success as a model for sustainable, multi-service community design.
