The Dublin Airport Passenger Boarding Zone is a high-profile aviation infrastructure project designed to enhance passenger capacity and improve operational efficiency within one of Ireland’s busiest transport hubs. Constructed using an innovative offsite modular methodology, the facility was assembled from 77 prefabricated steel-framed modules, allowing the building to be delivered within an accelerated programme whilst minimising disruption to the live airport environment. The design incorporates large open-plan passenger waiting areas with clear spans exceeding 19 metres, creating a spacious and flexible internal environment capable of accommodating high passenger volumes.
Our involvement focused on delivering robust, practical design solutions that supported the fast-track construction programme and the demanding operational requirements of an active international airport. The facility was designed to seamlessly integrate with Dublin Airport’s existing fire safety, security, communications, and data infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted airport operations throughout the construction phase. Externally, the building features contemporary anthracite grey cladding, a wraparound louvre screen concealing rooftop plant, and an extensive cantilevered canopy providing weather protection for passengers and staff. Internally, high-quality, durable finishes and coordinated wayfinding elements create a consistent passenger experience aligned with the wider terminal environment.
Primarily serving Aer Lingus operations to the UK and continental Europe, the Passenger Boarding Zone provides seven boarding gates serving nine aircraft stands and can accommodate approximately 1,000 passengers at any one time. Designed to handle up to 8,000 passengers per day, the facility delivers a significant enhancement to airport capacity while demonstrating the benefits of modern methods of construction in delivering complex infrastructure projects within challenging timescales and constrained operational environments.
